Located in Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs, Ashwood High School is 17 kilometres from Melbourne. It is serviced by excellent public transport with buses and trains running regularly. It is close to major shopping centres including Chadstone Shopping Centre

Ashwood High School has a large cohort of International Students from a wide range of countries including China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Finland.  Our International Student Program is an integral part of the school.

 

Ashwood High School accepts international students from Year 7 to 12. Students from Year 7 to 9 under the age of 15 will only be considered if they live with a parent or a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) approved relative.

 

INTENSIVE ENGLISH COURSE

Prior to the commencement of studies at Ashwood High School, international students are required to undertake 21 weeks of intensive English course at an English Language Centre or school. Our main English Language course providers are Blackburn English Language School, Glen Eira English Language Centre, Melbourne Language Centre, and Hawthorn English Language School. Application for enrolment in the intensive English course must be made through the International Education Division of the Department of Education and Training.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT

Once international students commence at Ashwood High School, they are well supported with the following programs:

  • They are taught in specialised EAL classes from Year 10 to Year 12
  • They receive additional support by having an interpretive aide in their classes for mainstream subjects
  • Compulsory after school Homework Club on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday  to catch up with work and to receive assistance from the interpretive aide and the Assistant Manager of the International Student Program
  • After School Maths and Science Homework Club for Years 11 and 12 students to get further assistance from their Maths and Science teachers.

 

ORIENTATION  PROGRAM

All new international students are involved in an Orientation Program prior to their commencement at the school to help them adjust and settle into their new school environment. Features of the Orientation Program include:

 

  • Tour of the school
  • Introduction to Key staff members
  • Knowledge of the local area of Ashwood
  • Transportation in the local community
  • Key policies relating to enrolment
  • Course counselling to select Year Level subjects

 

The International Student Program (ISP) Team which consists of the International Student Program Coordinator, the Assistant Manager  and the Interpretive  Aide will assist new students with the following:

  • Establish a bank account
  • Purchase a new notebook/laptop
  • Purchase a new mobile phone
  • Purchase of textbooks and school uniform

Students are encouraged to seek  assistance  and are well supported by the Support Team comprises of : The International Student Program Coordinator, the Assistant Coordinator, the Interpretive Aide, the House Coordinators, the VCE Coordinator, Careers and Pathways Coordinators and the Wellbeing Team.

HOMESTAY

Ashwood is responsible for the provision of high quality   homestay accommodation for students who have opted to study here without their parents. All homestay places are chosen in the Ashwood areas close to the school which enable students to walk, cycle or take a short bus ride. Homestay families are carefully screened and selected to ensure international students receive the best care and support in their “home” away from home. To give students a sense of belonging, homestay families involve students in family activities, celebration of birthdays, and the celebration of festivals such as Christmas and New Year.
